The Torrent crossover expands the automaker’s total performance boundaries by combining car-like agility with SUV capability and versatility. Sharing its platform with the Saturn Vue and the Chevrolet Equinox, the Torrent features a multi-purpose interior that is configurable to countless uses, including a rear seat that adjusts fore and aft and reclines.
Available in two- and all-wheel drive configurations, power for the base Torrent is generated by the tried-and-true 3400 3.4L V6. Torque is communicated to the ground through an Aisin AF33-5 five-speed automatic gearbox.
The big news for 2008 is the availability of the new GXP performance model for the Torrent. Offered in both front- and all-wheel drive configurations, the Torrent GXP is equipped with the sophisticated 3.6L V6 with variable valve timing, bolted to a Hydra-Matic 6T70 electronically-controlled six-speed automatic transmission with manual shift mode.
The GXP is differentiated from the standard Torrent with an aggressive stance and exterior design that includes a unique hood, new front fascia with cooling inlets, detailed grille inserts and chrome dual exhaust tips. Control hardware enhancements and upgrades for the GXP include a one-inch lower stance, stiffer shock valving, spring rates, suspension bushing, larger and solid stabilizer bars, hydraulic power steering and specific 235/50R18 all-season radial sport tires.
Interior enhancements and upgrades for the GXP include a leather-wrapped, three-spoke steering wheel, GXP-specific instruments highlighted with Pontiac’s signature red backlighting and a 140-mph speedometer. A chic, “piano black†appearance on the instrument panel and surrounding the shifter gate add a new performance dimension to the interior.
On the road, the base Torrent delivers a responsive and comfortable performance. This well-presented crossover is ideal for the economical demands of the daily dispatch.
The Torrent's solid body architecture is complemented by an independent MacPherson strut suspension up front plus a trailing arm, four-link coil spring layout in the rear. The rear configuration facilitates the SUV's low, wide load floor and maximizes rear passenger space.
The compact Pontiac SUV is further distinguished by a wide stance, long wheelbase and large door openings. A multifunctional cargo panel in the cargo area can be adjusted to three different heights plus a fourth rearward position that forms a table with the liftgate open -- perfect for picnics or tailgating. The panel features carpet on one side and a washable plastic surface on the other for messy loads, plus handy grocery hooks.
